Christmas Contractions - Falso Alarmo!

Christmas Day brought a fun surprise; a real world test of our labor preparedness. This morning, Pamela started experiencing contractions. The first two were bout two hours apart, then the next about an hour. The next was about 30 minutes, then the next in about 8. After the third, I was already on the phone with the doctor on-call. To make a long story (day), short, we ended up testing our preparedness for the big day. We packed up the car in a hurry and ran off to the hospital. The doctor met us and Pamela was immediately in bed and being monitored. She ended up having moderate contractions about 3 minutes part. She never did dilate or efface, which is a good thing since Sophia is only 35.8 weeks along. Even though she'd be fine, the longer she's 'swimming', the better. We have been given permission for a New Years baby though. In the end, the doctor gave Pamela a prescription, to take as needed, that would stop any false contractions and ordered her to drink 5-6 liters of water a day. Lack of sufficient hydration may have been the cause since that is the number one cause of false contractions. The good part is that Pamela now knows what they feel like and we know that we are fairly well prepared.

Ironically enough, Pamela had a previously scheduled appointment with the doctor we saw today. Yes, we're still going.

New Look For The Blog

The love and support that everyone has shown us, including Sophia, has really moved me. It gives me a new light to shine on my day. It truly has been life changing. As such, I thought it appropriate to give the blog a new, happier look. Since we're having a girl, why not something feminine.

Message to Sophia

SOPHIA…

Esperando tranquilos tu llegada,

34 Weeks and All is Well - UPDATED

Not much more to say than that. Pamela is now officially 115 pounds, a total weight gain of 27 pounds so far. I guess I shouldn't have laughed when they said that she'd gain 30 pounds. The doctors say that she looks great and she should go full-term. Now, off to start the Sophia diaper fundraising.

New, Much Better Video

We have a new, and much better, video of Sophia dancing. She's listening to Niyaz and really enjoying it. The video can be found by clicking on the link below. The music you hear is the actual music that she's listening too. This song seems to be her favorite. It's about 4MB so it may take a minute to download. Feel free to Save it to your hard drive to help me save on bandwidth. Sorry for the cheese-factor, but I guess I'm becoming one of those camera happy Dads. Now I get it.

Found a Pediatrician!

We finally foud our Pediatrician for Sophia. They're a big pratice with hours 7 days a week. They have phoine support 24/7 for any sort of question. Most importantly to me, they do not believe in medicating every little thing. They like babies to develop their own, strong immune systems. They even have a doctor on staff that is big into Complimentary Medicine and Natural Remedies. You can check them out at http://www.pediatricdoc.com/index.htm. They're next to the hospital where Pamela is giving birth so they are fairly convienently located for us. One more thing done.

The Big Day Bag List

I thought it might be fun to share with everyone what we're packing in the bag(s) that we are taking to the hospital. Seriously, we're taking all of this stuff.
  • Pillow(s)
  • Musical Teddy Bear that Sophia listens to most nights
  • Radio / CD's
  • Infant carrier
  • Baby blanket
  • Baby clothes / cap / socks
  • Candy to help keep Pamela hydrated during labor
  • Night gown / pajamas
  • Nursing bra / pads
  • Slippers / socks
  • Robe
  • Toiletries
  • Going home clothes for Mother and Child
  • Diaper bag*
  • Hair band
  • Snacks for the Birthing Coach (That's me!)
  • Hair dryer / shampoo
  • Makeup
  • Phone list
  • Video camera
  • Playing cards
  • Lotion
  • Baby book - They'll do a nice set of footprints in the book for us
  • Coins
  • Breast pump*
  • Nursing pillow (boppy)*

*Yet to be purchased

I think that's it. Maybe ... there might be more.

The Real Internet Dancing Baby

Yeah! Black Friday brought us new toys and the ability to capture and post video. Click here to see our first video of Sophia kicking. I know it's not long, nor is the picture great, but it was taken last night at around 12:30am. I promise bigger and better video soon. This is my first attempt a home video production, so please be kind.

NOTE: The video is in Windows Media format so you shouldn't have any problems viewing it.

10 Weeks ... Make That 9 1/2 Weeks To Go

Tuesday was Pamela's latest Doctors appointment. The reason why this is news worthy is that everything is on course for a full forty-week pregnancy. All of her measurements (including Sophia) are good for a natural, full-term birth. Pamela now gets to go in every other week to see the Doc. The bad news is that there will not be any more Ultrasound pictures. I guess we all will have to wait.

Birthing Classes

Last weekend we attended birthing classes at Waterbury Hospital. I must admit that I am extremely impressed.

First of all, the staff is very caring and compassionate and it really shows. The staff is scheduled to minimize the number of shifts changes during labor and birth. In fact, a mid-wife will be assigned to each laboring mother when she comes in. They also have a very good system of re-staffing if, for any reason, the mother is uncomfortable with the people assigned to her. After meeting part of the staff, I doubt that this will be the case since they all are very nice people. They also have four lactation consultants on staff.

In addition to the staff, the facility itself is setup to make the birthing process the best it can be. Every mother labors, delivers and recovers in the same room (unless a cesarean is needed). In fact, all babies spend their stay at the hospital in the same room as the mother, unless the mother requests the baby spend the night in the well-baby nursery (between 11pm and 7am). These rooms are especially nice since every mother must stay at the hospital for 48 hours after giving birth, 96 if by cesarean. Each private room is equipped with special beds that can convert to a birthing chair to allow the mother to give birth in an upright position. This eases the birth process by allowing the mother to use gravity and be in an optimal position for the positioning of the baby in the birth canal. The birthing center is also setup very nicely for anxious family members waiting for a screaming new father to come running down the hallway. There are two private family rooms in the center itself, and an additional conference room. All three rooms are especially comfortable with all of life's necessities including cable TV and snacks galore.

Security was also very impressive. First of all, gone are the days that anyone can walk in off of the street to come look at the babies. To get into the birthing ward, you must be buzzed in. To get in, you need to ring a bell, on a video intercom, and prove your identity and the identity of the mother / father. If this is your first visit, a staff member will meet you and accompany you to the parents where they will identity you. If there is any doubt as to who you are, the father, or birthing coach, will be asked to identify you before entering. In addition to the tight security in getting in, babies have a hard time getting out. Every baby is fitted with a tracking device that interfaces with the security system, kind of like lo-jack for babies. If the device is removed from the baby, or the baby is removed from the secure zone of the birthing center, an audible alarm will sound, all of the perimeter doors at the center will automatically lock and will remain locked until every baby is accounted for. The device actually will tell the staff which is the offending baby as well as it's location. Essentially, the staff always knows which baby is where at all times. Also, whenever the Mother, Birthing Coach (yes, that would be me if you were curious) and / or Baby leave or enter a room, it is logged. All three of us will be tagged with hospital bands.

Of course, we did the Lamaze breathing thing. And, yes, it was hard to keep a straight face in a room full of people panting (especially with Sophia literally dancing while trying to do this). We also learned quit a bit about the labor phases as well as the actual anatomical changes that occur during labor. We also got to watch some fun videos as well. Let's just say that they we're very REAL and most of the expectant mothers reacted. This is not to say that they were bad, just a good primer as to what to expect. They were great since they lead of through the entire labor and birthing process of two births. They both took different approaches to the labor and birthing processes. It actually helped us make some important decisions. We also learned how to do the Labor Waltz, a funny looking walk to help the mother cope with labor.

The heaviest and most emotional part of the weekend was our V.I.P. tour to that Special Care Nursery. This is where premature and sick newborns, including jaundice, spend there days at the hospital. It was both difficult but nice to see how well setup they are as well as how well the babies, including a 32 week preemie, were doing. They are very definitely in good hands.

All in all, it was a very exciting and educational weekend. I'm now having an even harder tine sleeping at night due to my excitement about Sophia's arrival.

NOTE: Keep an eye out for out for posts that will include the big list of stuff that we will be taking to the hospital as well as our birthing plan (yes, I know, I'm a geek but it helps to have it written out) that will include labor pahses.

Week 30 and Growing

Now officially thirty weeks pregnant and twenty pounds more than when she started. I have even caught her bumping her belly into things when she walks up to them. She's at the point where I sometimes need to help her put on her socks and shoes. It's getting close!

Second Round Ultrasound Pics ... Better Late Than Never

Sorry it took so long to get these posted. They're from late August. They do show a lot of detail and was the proof that we had a girl (not pictured). Enjoy!

29 Weeks and Growing Faster Than Ever

Believe it or not, Pamela has actually put on 17 pounds to date. Pretty amazing considering that she has three more months to go. Sophia is more active than ever. She gets crazy for Chocolate and Dr. Seuss. She's a girl after our own hearts.

Finally Updating the Blog ...

Kinda ... Just a quick note. We got back from our vacation a couple of weeks ago. While in Chile, we got a bunch of baby stuff (Pamela got a big belly). I also acquired a bunch of baby stuff while Pamela was gone (surprise!). I'm hoping to update the blog in the next few days with all that stuff, as well as a pic of Pamela's new belly.

And So It Begins ...

While at Wal-Mart today, we just 'happened' to stroll by the Baby Section (an accident? I think not.). Well, let's just say that we left $75 later. Good thing that it was all clearance stuff. Of course, not knowing the baby's sex, it was all gender neutral clothing. If anything, it looks like we'll be well prepared clothing-wise. We still have far to go though.

Yoga and Childbirth

Some of you know that Pamela and I have been practicing Yoga for about 10 months now. I firmly belive that Yoga cab be a great aid in childbirth. There are quit a few websites that agree with me:

What an amazing day today. Today, not yesterday, was the first ultrasound. Not only is it amazing to see your unborn baby, but to see it's heart beating and to actually hear the heart. PHEW! Very moving. Officially, the baby (yes, only one) is nine weeks along. The due date is January 24th, 2007. Good month to be born. I think the baby should be early by 13 days.

Baby Names

Since my good friend Craig had to go and put thoughts in my head like "What are you going to do about Life Insurance? .... What about College? ..." I find myself awake in the middle of the night. I also think that this is also exaggerated by the fact that we're already discussing how we can both can remain working and raise our family. Our best solution would be for me to teach dog classes in the evenings and weekends so I can stay home with our baby(ies?). Hiring a Nanny doesn't seem practical and asking a relative(s) to move-in until the child can go to school [I'm thinking long-term] doesn't seem fair. So, I think I will pursue the dog school with greater vigor.

Excited about the appointment later today, I've been thinking about names for the baby. Of course, I can't think of any other than the one name Pamela and I have come up with for a girl: Sophia. Of course, then we come to middle names, using family names, borrowing someone's name ... Now it gets complicated. What to do, what to do ...

Is there anyone out there that has any ideas / thoughts / name suggestions? If so, please click on the comments link and let us know.

Big Day Tomorrow!

The first ultrasound will be tomorrow. This will [possibly] determine how many babies we will be having (I guess I secretly want Twins) and how far along they are. The due date will be determined.

On a side note, Pamela is starting to show, not much, but she has developed a little belly.

Stay tuned for the official due date and possibly even an early ultrasound picture.

Everybody's Going Baby Crazy ...

Well, maybe not yet ... but we're getting there. I won't say any names, but I have already confirmed three relatives are either shopping or making stuff for the baby(ies?) and at least one non-family member is making something. We've also had about a half-dozen people promise us baby stuff (one person who recently had three children in four years ... that could be a lot of stuff).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining one bit. Heck, I even encourage it. In fact, we should have a contest to see who can spoil the baby the most :)

Seriously, we are very touched that so many people are so excited about our baby(ies?). It really means a tremendous amount to us. Although our families are so far away, we feel the closeness and love from everyone.

Background Timeline

So here's the basic timeline leading up until today:

May 27, 2006

Pamela is a few weeks "late". This is very unusual since she is extremely regular. It's also worth noting that she just stopped taking the pill around the beginning of April (?).

Anyway, on this day, Pamela takes a home pregnancy test. It states that test results can take up to 3 minutes. It responded positive in about 2 seconds. We both looked at each other and smiled for a while.

June 2, 2006

This was Pamela's first Doctor's appointment regarding possibly being pregnant. Before any pregnancy test we're taken, the doctors started scheduling the next nine months and preparing us for parenthood. I guess she really is pregnant. None the less, she gets to have about nine viles of blood taken for various tests. One of which is very cool; genetic testing for Cystic Fibrosis. If Pamela tests positive, then I get tested. Only if we are both positive, then do we discuss the implications. I guess this makes me a bit nervous, but also glad that this can be tested for beforehand.

June 7, 2006

Pamela gets the results of her tests. They start telling her about her blood work, low platelet's, negative results for Cystic Fibrosis (phew!) ... blah, blah, blah. Pamela interrupts them "I just want to know if I'm pregnant." Their response, "Oh sorry, yes, your are." HA! Anyway, IT'S OFFICIAL!!! Everything else is good, except she needs o go see a Hematologist to work on getting her platelet count up.

Not too long after she gets the results does she start to feel a few symptoms. Nothing major, just more tired than usual and a slight bit of nausea.

June 13, 2006

Pamela's first craving: home-made garlic bread. Of course, this was after 9pm, when we were in bed. And, of course, I make her two pieces, she eats half of one and then she's done. She tells me her tastes are now changing.

Second Official Craving

Pamela's now experiencing her second official craving: Fresh Nectarines. We ended up running to the store to pick her up a couple and we ended up coming home with $26 worth of fresh fruit salad, veggies and other healthy stuff. I guess it beats French Fries and Ice Cream (of course, those are some of her usual desires).

Another Sleepless Night

Can't sleep. Too much on my mind (excited about baby).
